A recent piece in FT Adviser made a compelling case that pension transfers are stuck in their BlackBerry phase. Well, the iPhone has arrived.
In April, the UK's first inter-master trust pension transfer completed using open, interoperable standards — ISO 20022 messages over the SWIFT network. That's the same infrastructure that already handles hundreds of thousands of funds, ISA, GIA and in-specie pension transfers every year. Not a proof of concept. A live transfer.
And it doesn’t stop there. Pathfinder — a group of eight master trusts representing over £162 billion in assets and 14.5 million savers including Nest, People’s Pension, Smart Pension, and Now Pension — has formed to scale it.
The FT Adviser piece rightly identifies that the friction in transfers isn't just technology — it's the legal, compliance and risk frameworks built for a paper era. But open standards don't just speed up the existing process. They're underpinned by the legal, liability and trust framework of TeX — a contract club that already backs every electronic ISA and GIA transfer — and their process changes where the hard work happens. Earlier validation means data problems get caught before a transfer is in flight, not after. Fewer rejections. Better saver experience. And critically — for master trusts in particular, where pots are typically smaller — materially lower costs.
It's not a BlackBerry with more keys. It's a different device, with a better ecosystem and an experience to match.
The timing matters too. Pension dashboards are arriving, small pot consolidation is accelerating, and regulators are paying close attention to transfer performance. Getting the infrastructure right isn't a technical nice-to-have anymore — it's a value, outcomes and regulatory imperative.
It's the answer to the industry's need for scalable, cost-effective cash pension transfers.
The question isn't "when will transfers have their iPhone moment?" It's "how long will BlackBerry last?"
